DRII established the industry's international standard in 1997 when we published the Professional Practices for Business Continuity Planners.

We published our original "Common Body of Knowledge" in September of 1993, after more than two years of intensive work by the Certification Commission.  Developed by recognized experts in business continuity / disaster recovery planning and education, the document provided a standard resource base outlining the experience required by professionals in the field, and met one of the organization's original goals from 1988.

Each subject area in the current Professional Practices contains a description, the professional's role within the area, and an outline of recommended knowledge within the subject area.  The 10 subject areas cover topics such as:

Project Initiation and Management
Risk Evaluation and Control
Business Impact Analysis
Developing Business Continuity Strategies
Emergency Response and Operations
Developing and Implementing Business Continuity Plans
Awareness Programs and Training
Maintaining and Exercising the Business Continuity Plans
Crisis Communications
Coordination with External Agencies

This international industry standard undergoes a rigorous update process annually.  Changes are solicited from professionals world-wide; then those submissions are reviewed by a DRII panel of experts for pertinency and accurateness.  Resulting changes are incorporated regularly to keep the standard up-to-date.
